John Moores Painting Prize

Protest, April 1st 2009

The Biennial may have finished for another year but there is still plenty of time to see the John Moores Painting Prize at the Walker Art Gallery which continues until 3 January 2011.

The prize is the big daddy of the Biennial, having started back in 1957 providing a regular survey of contemporary painting.

This year’s jury, artists Gary Hume, Alison Watt, Ged Quinn & Goshka Macuga and curator/critic Sir Norman Rosenthal, chose Spectrum Jesus by Keith Coventry to receive the first prize of £25,000.

The Walker recently revealed the Visitors’ Choice prize was won by the rather appropriate Protest, April 1st 2009 by Nicolas Middleton, a photorealist take on the Financial Fool’s Day protest at the Bank of England last year.

Pop in to see which you prefer.
